ILQ Movie Day?

ILQ, partnered with Barzan Digital and other to be named partners are planning on creating a great Movie Club for you fans of great movies.

The set up will be a Micro Cinema with a High Definition cinema and amazing surround sound courtesy of Barzan Digital. You’ll see wrinkles you haven’t imagined and hear sounds that you probably shouldn’t have heard all on an amazing high definition screen.

Enjoy a great social night with good old fashioned pop corn and meet new people! All of this in the comfort of some amazingly great Lovesacs which you just melt into when you sit on it.

So now that you know what we’re planning, who’s interested?

Feel free to also reply on the forum!

To thobe or not to thobe?

thobeHere’s kind of a sad thought, the thobe is such a great peice of clothing, it’s woven and cut in such a way that it keeps you cool by circulating air and due to it’s material and colour (usually white) it blocks heat from the sun.

As I was thinking about the thobe I started to think about the advantages and disadvantages that it held at a social level. I notice that if I’m wearing a thobe, some people treat me nicer in stores, in other stores they’ll assume I’m rich and bump up the price.  Why is that? That’s discrimination in it’s purist form.

What did get me into thinking though was the reaction that I got during my daily activities. In particular, I noted that when I’m wearing a thobe and in the elevator, expats are less likely to say ‘good morning’ to me than if I’m in a suit (which I also wear). I pointed it out to a Kuwaiti friend of mine (who was wearing a suit) who said that it was just a coincidence (which it might well be!) when a person entered the elevator turned to my friend said Good Morning and ignored me (I was on the other side).

It could be paranoia or a coincidence, it could be that I’m vigilant, but trust me I don’t look menacing and usually smile and always say Salam when entering an area. Don’t be shy of Qataris (or Arabs in general), they may look like gliding ghosts (a friend once said that to me), but we’re more like Men in White :)

Solution? More expats need to wear the thobe so that the line between Qataris and non-Qataris is blurred. We do after all live in a country which I’m proud to say is becoming more International and globally tolerant (I hope). Oh and for those who are actually thinking of getting a thobe, do it! Qataris will be happy at the fact that expats are adopting their culture and you’ll feel much more comfortable too!

QBiz on QA?

Just noticed this on their website when booking my ticket but they’ve got something called Qbiz. I’ll add this to the “How to get QMiles Fast!” guide.

Basically if you have a business, you can earn Qmiles on the tickets that your company reserves.

You get Qmiles for the company AND the individual traveling, so that’s double Qmiles which is great.

Rainy Doha

girly-rain-cloud-wall-decal_531601471

Looks like we’re going to be enjoying some rain for around a week!

Check out [www.weather.com]

Rain’s diffinately a good thing and it’ll push down all that dust in the air to give us some crystal clear views .

The city and its outskirts received scattered rains yesterday. The Meteorology Department has forecast more rains in the coming days, as the country is witnessing unstable weather conditions marking the transition from winter to spring. A forecaster from the department said yesterday that the dusty and cloudy weather would prevail with chances of scattered rains today and thundershower at times.

It was a very nice turn out! Thank you to all those who turned up.

We literally took over half of the entire cafe. The staff were nice enough to reshuffle everything for us!

I was sent a few photos but hopefully next time we’ll take a group photo!

Hopefully we’ll see you all at the next social event as well.

Coins of Candies?

Coins or Candies?

Saving money in Qatar

qatarriyalsIt’s the credit crisis right now they say. We see it on the tv, we read in in the newspaper, and the garderner sings it while watering the asphault (Apparantly we need to water our roads sometimes). When I think crisis, I imagine people running around with their hands in the air in a total frenzy screaming “Oh my Gooooood!!!!!!”.

Luckily though, that little visual is limited to my imagination. However this next bit of information is far from a dream and is entirely factual.

Money! Yes Money! Are you paying attention now?

Let’s talk about a few ways to save some cash or cash in on some special offers.

CashSave (Money Boomerang) –  This is a service launched  in Qatar which gives you cash back when you buy stuff at certain stores. To be honest I found this by mistake. They should really advertise on ILQ to get out there! Their method is quite special because it works ON TOP of promotions. So if a store that participates has a discount going on, you’ll still get cashback. To make things simple, if you go LeNotre for example, just give them your CashSave card (which you get by signing up at their site and getting for free), and you’ll be given a cheque with your cashback. It’s up to 20% if I remember correctly. After I signed up on the site, I was sent a book with all the participating stores which was handy.

The Entertainer – You need to buy this book. It’s actually quite a substantial investment. The book costs 200QR, however I guarantee that you’ll get your money back (or your money’s worth) pretty fast. It’s basically a book of coupons where you get special prices or two for one deals. They have restaurants and places  from all over the place! Including Johnny Rockets, Golf Club, and Children’s play areas. You can pick up a copy at most places like Jarir, Virgin, Carrefour etc…

Qatar Airways Qmiles – We talked about this before and it still stands. Getting Qmiles is very easy and sometimes it can be lucrative. Why not save up Qmiles and then sell your ticket? Save enough and that’s a cool 2-4k you’ve made. You can get Qmiles on your credit card (QNB), through paying your Qtel bill, on their special offers, or even when you go to certain stores like Nokia.

Airmiles Scratch and Win Offer - This one isn’t long term, it’s only on for March and there’s two weeks to go. To be honest I don’t even know why they call their service Airmiles. I mean yes you can get flights but it’s more of a rewards program. Once you collect miles you can get freebies on electronics, flights, vouchers, gifts, etc…  Now the offer is no matter how much you spend, if you’ve got an airmiles card you’ll get a ‘guaranteed to win something’ scratch card. You can win anything from Cinema tickets to Air tickets or even Gold and Vouchers. All you do is log in to your account on the website, type the code on the scratch card and it tells you your prize.

Thanks to Blitz for mentioning this here

ILQ Discounts – ILQ’s always trying to help you get discounts no matter where you go so if you head of to King Koil, Barzan Digital, Lovesac, or   Even if you’re unsure if there’s a discount, let them know that you came from iloveqatar.net! Especially at places Link Travel, Fauchon, 51East, Busy Bees Nursury, and Global DJs events.

Got a special offer or method of saving money? Share it with us on the Qatar Forums !

Vodafone IPO Open Night!

vodafone20logo-saidaonline1

Just a little reminder that the Vodafone IPO event is tomorrow! It’s on the Corniche near the Emiri Diwan. It’s going to be fantastic and is open to the public!

I recommend going to watch history being made and bring a few snacks and have a little dinner by the sea!

I know it may seem that I’m a bit Voda-crazy right now, but this is a great opportunity in so many ways!

Freedom of Expression

Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which the Qatari Government is a signatory of states: Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any medias and regardless of any frontiers.

The Emiri Decision Number 86 of the year 2007 on the establishment of the Doha Free Information Centre marked yet another step towards establishing a State of rights and freedom of speech. The decision stipulated that the Centre be a non-profit organization, headquartered in Doha City, and have the authority to establish other affiliated centres inside and outside Qatar. It is worth mentioning that His Highness the Emir issued a decision in 1998 annulling the ministry of information, giving birth to a new era of freedom of speech where censorship was removed from local media.
