Great Wall?? Think about Great Mall!

Well as Paperboy on ILQ so rightly mentioned this was covered back in October 2008 and by yours truly however it’s just been making the rounds on the net and had a little blurb on the side column of today’s Gulf Times. (see below)

untitled-1

This project is going to be home to an amazing amount of shops. Who knows, perhaps ILQ will have it’s own little shop there! For now we’ll be happy with the Great Mall of Qatar. Some may argue that it’s too huge or too much of a grand project but if you ask me, I think it’s great to have some more choice of where to go. It’ll develop the Industrial Area nicely and spread out conjestion around Qatar :) .

I have to mention one CRUCIAL mistake though in the Gulf Times article. It’s a Qatar newspaper and this is Qatar so they should know that we call the sport FOOTBALL not Soccer! (When I go to the US I’ll gladly call it soccer.)

ah but IS it a ‘copy dubai’?

They are encouraging people to walk around AND they’re providing commercial spots.

This in turn will create balance with rentals.

I’ve been searching for spots to open a couple of stores for 2 years now and they’re either TOO expensive or in crap locations.

    What else has Qatar copied?

    Ahmad,

The West Bay lagoon and artificial islands were master planned in the 1970s. The area was reclaimed during the 70s from the sea and the dredging to create the channel and the islands started in 1995 if I remember correctly. A private artificial island was created to the north of the site at around that time too if not earlier and the “spine” of the Pearl was constructed at that time too.

Interesting thing is that Shk. Mohammed of Dubai was touring the lagoon and islands as well as being briefed on the master plan a while before announcing the Palm project.

Statistics show that retail space per capita in Qatar is less than Dubai and the US by quite a large margin and there is quite a large pent up demand for retail space. Throw in factors of very high retail rentals, high demand, large sums of key money (i’ve seen figures close to European shopping high streets), the economic and population growth over the next 3 years and last but not least a large amount of existing retail space being demolished in many parts of town and it is not difficult to see how the 900,000sqm will be filled.

Something to note too is that this not a shopping mall. This a commercial street similar to Salwa Road, but unlike Salwa road it is master planned with good roads, good access, and plenty of parking to go around.

I was just going to comment on those same issues. MT to the rescue!

Yes indeed it’s a commercial avenue (as mentioned in the ILQ article).

Freedom of Expression

Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which the Qatari Government is a signatory of states: Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any medias and regardless of any frontiers.

The Emiri Decision Number 86 of the year 2007 on the establishment of the Doha Free Information Centre marked yet another step towards establishing a State of rights and freedom of speech. The decision stipulated that the Centre be a non-profit organization, headquartered in Doha City, and have the authority to establish other affiliated centres inside and outside Qatar. It is worth mentioning that His Highness the Emir issued a decision in 1998 annulling the ministry of information, giving birth to a new era of freedom of speech where censorship was removed from local media.
