DTFF not BFFs?

I don’t understand something with the Doha Tribecca Film Festival. If they’re trying to promote it in the country and someone adds a video on vimeo (uneditted, unchanged, and links to the DTFF) in order to promote the event and to promote Qatar, then why would you want it to be removed?

I’m sorry but I’m trying to make sense of this… because it’s personally beneficial to me if someone did it for a video of ILQ.

    Westerners get so idiotic about copyright. This summer, a movie trailer for the upcoming Alice in Wonderland movie got leaked, and lots of people posted it on YouTube. Disney made YouTube take them all down! They forced the removal of FREE ADVERTISING FOR THEIR PRODUCT! Silly Disney. :-)

    Wow, I’m surprised. If that’s happening, they’re surely missing out on beneficial marketing assistance by doing so. That’s how the word gets out…sort of like a pyramid scheme. Interesting.

    Perhaps it’s because it’s being run by amateurs?

    The whole festival seems to be shaping up to be a disorganized mess.

    There have been movies wrongfully advertising as premieres when they have already been shown commercially in Landmark and City Center, in one case they have advertised a movie here when the Director hasn’t given permission for the film to be shown here, and movies are being subject to censorship.

    I can’t believe that only now has the schedule been released with the times and dates for screenings, or that the whole event clashes with the Tennis tour. What a masterstroke of planning and foresight that was, in a city where almost nothing happens all year long, two great events have been scheduled on the same night.

    The saddest part is that half the films look like the kind of thing that would just be screened in general release in any other country, but here we get one chance and one chance only to see them as part of a film festival (while slasher movies, horror movies, war movies and action movies are screened week after week after week in the cinemas).

    I’ll be surprised if the event comes back next year, the way things are going.

    DTFF is oozing amateurism from every pore. It could have been something great, but it appears to be anything but.

    It stinks of something that was brought to Doha purely through someone’s contacts and wealth, without any thought going in to how it should be executed in this region.

    Money talks but no-one thinks. Same old, same old.

    So, I went down to City Center on Friday to buy my DTFF tickets, and it was so painful.

    The staff attempting to man the box office had no idea about which movies were on when, and were asking me where the movie was showing, what time, etc. They had no idea, so it was lucky I had a very detailed list of exactly what I wanted to see, which time, which cinema etc otherwise it would have taken hours (as it did for the people ahead of me in the line).

    After I paid, she then tells me that they are having trouble with the ticketing system, so I’ll need to come back to collect the tickets at a later date because they can’t be printed right now. I asked ‘when should I come back – one hour? one day??’. She looked totally puzzled and suggested Monday…

    This festival isn’t doing much to redeem itself in the eyes of patrons. It’s becoming yet another Doha sham event, like the tennis or the Asian Games or the football matches, with minimum professionalism, but reflected in the newspapers with adoring editorials about how the event will be/is/was a HUGE success and how lucky everyone is to be living in Doha.

    Would it be too much to ask that this country hires competent people every so often to do things properly??

Freedom of Expression

    Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which the Qatari Government is a signatory of states: Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any medias and regardless of any frontiers.

    The Emiri Decision Number 86 of the year 2007 on the establishment of the Doha Free Information Centre marked yet another step towards establishing a State of rights and freedom of speech. The decision stipulated that the Centre be a non-profit organization, headquartered in Doha City, and have the authority to establish other affiliated centres inside and outside Qatar. It is worth mentioning that His Highness the Emir issued a decision in 1998 annulling the ministry of information, giving birth to a new era of freedom of speech where censorship was removed from local media.
