Top 10 Websites in Qatar

I’ve been wanting to do this for a while now. Qatar Happening dropped us a line to let us know that ILQ was ranked number 8 on  xmarks’ top 10 sites about Qatar. That’s pretty awesome! ILQ’s been going strong for a year and 11 months now and it’s become one of the fastest growing sites related to Qatar! It really is an honour! I hope that with the development and changes to the site, we’ll see the forums grow even more and become one of the best websites about Qatar!

Update: 25 April 2010 – iLoveQatar.net is ranked number 5 now! We’ve moved up one rank a month! Check out XMarks!

However I thought I’d go and create a list of the top 10 websites in Qatar based on our opinion and general knowledge. However this Top 10 list isn‘t going to be in any particular order! I know I know, how can it be a Top 10 if it’s not in order. I’ll leave it up to you to decide :)

1. Qatar Shares - It’s an arabic website, but it’s community is probably one of the most well known for Qataris

2. iLoveQatar.net – I had to include iLoveQatar.net in here. It’s a community that has the latest developments and skyscrapers, latest events, latest news, and so much more! Help it grow!

3. Qatar Visitor – I really love Qatar Visitor. The admin is honest, tries to remain unbiased and really tries to provide great insights into Qatar. It’s definitely a gem of a website.

4. Hukoomi – Pay your speeding tickets, renew your visa, check the govmn’t calendar, and more. This website has made tedious stuff so much more simpler.

5. Qatar Happening – Looking for some great interviews, photographs, events in Qatar then you’ve got to visit their site. Qatar Happening also has a magazine which you can pick up in stores now!

6. Qatar Living – Qatar Living has been going for 4 years now? It’s a great website for it’s bustling Classifieds and a very awesome photographic community.

7. The Qatar News sitesGulf Times, Peninsula, Qatar Tribune, Al Jazeera, Al Raya, Al Sharq.

8. Qatar University - This site gets a ton of traffic and is the source for many students to debate, talk , and just roam the halls of the internet.

9. DSM – Another site that I visit regularly. It’s now called the Doha Exchange and it still needs a bit of a face lift but I check the site regularly when updating my portfolio.

10.  MOI - I don’t really have much to comment, but it’s just another useful site like Hukoomi.

Qatar Visitor also wrote their own Top 10! Click here to view their opinions :)

What are your favourite sites? Which blogs and sites do you visit most often in Qatar?

When do Qatar Airways fly to Melbourne? Now!

I got asked this question quite a lot! Your question has now been answered!

Qatar Airways now travel to Melbourne

Water Park in Qatar!

Looks like we’re going to get a Water Park in Qatar. No no, not the one in Villaggio which we gave the scoop on a while back http://iloveqatar.net/forum/read.php?5,7320,7320#msg-7320, but a full fledged water park!

The aqua park will be an entertainment centre spread over 100,000sq m on the Salwa Road, what’s better, it’ll be open April 2010!!

“Hala Group Enterprises general manager Ijaz Malik told Gulf Times that the park would feature a giant “wave pool”, a “lazy river”, an activity pool, a multiple slides complex, a family pool and a “dry” corner. Hala Group Enterprises is the developer of the project

Adjacent to the aqua park will be a 300,000sq m resort, currently under-construction and expected
to be completed in June 2011.”

Fuelyoursenses.qa revealed

Well it turns out that the fuelyoursenses.qa website was all part of Qtel’s rebranding. I don’t understand a few things. Why did they go with a color similar to Vodafone’s? Why not go blue?

Their site is definately cleaner that’s for sure.

I also wonder how much they spent on this promotion and if it was truly worth it… I mean, after seeing fuelyoursenses.qa I was curious, but after seeing the end result, I wasn’t ‘wowed’.

Could there be something new coming?

New club in Qatar – Lava

lavaI have to admit, it’s always exciting when a new venue is launched in Qatar. I always wonder if the club is going to be done right. From what I’m hearing so far, it sounds like it’s going to be fantastic. Global DJ’s “Master Jay” is now their resident DJ and he’ll be dishing out some great tunes. He gave me a personal call the other day and invited ILQ over for a bit of a tour and to judge for ourselves.

They’re located at the Intercontinental which is found between the Pearl and Westbay.

As long as they have great service, a great crowd, and great music; ILQ will be a supporter. I’ll post photos with ILQ’s own review soon.

Donate to charity!

donateSome people may have notice, but there’s now a little donate box on the left side of ILQ courtesy of Vodafone. (Right underneath ILQ’s Labour force donation button). They’re making it easy to donate to charity and all you need to do is select how much you’ve got to spare!

So if you’re feeling generous, go ahead and donate! Just visit http://www.iloveqatar.net and share a little :)

Freedom of Expression

Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which the Qatari Government is a signatory of states: Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any medias and regardless of any frontiers.

The Emiri Decision Number 86 of the year 2007 on the establishment of the Doha Free Information Centre marked yet another step towards establishing a State of rights and freedom of speech. The decision stipulated that the Centre be a non-profit organization, headquartered in Doha City, and have the authority to establish other affiliated centres inside and outside Qatar. It is worth mentioning that His Highness the Emir issued a decision in 1998 annulling the ministry of information, giving birth to a new era of freedom of speech where censorship was removed from local media.
