No women on Qatars Olympic team parade..

The Olympics is something that Qatar is proud to be a part of. With only a population of around 380,000 Qatar does quite well and is particularly known for Shooting, Archery, Horse Riding, Football, Heavy Weight Lifting and Taekwondo.

One question though that I was asked during the parade was, “where are all the women?”. Well there’s one point to mention. You can’t just get ANY woman to parade. They have to qualify as athletes. We do have qualifying athletes too and we’re so proud of them. Particularly Qatar’s best archer.

See here http://www.nadazeidan.com/

I was quite suprised and have no answer to that question. Maybe they were late? Maybe they didn’t want to parade. God knows… I think it’s a stupid move on Qatar’s Olympic Committee’s part. It just perpetuates the stereotype that woman are on the side lines.

BJJ in Doha

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. It’s the ultimate art. No other method of self defence or combat will aid you more than BJJ. While in the UK, I coached a great bunch of BJJ enthusiasts along with a friend of mine named Omar. We were both destined to go places but after a very stupid accident, I twisted my final vertebrae and Omar dislocated his shoulder. Never-the-less, I can say without a doubt that it’s a great form of exercise. Not only do you release tension and spar with some great people but you also tighten up your body and it’s a great way to lose weight in a short period of time.

One student lost 5 kilos in a month and his abs were starting to show underneath.

I’ve probably got your attention now, but I’m yet to sell you. The Gracie brothers created this great art and challenged the best of martial arts experts from around the world. BJJ is un-defeated. So I’ve been looking for a proper venue to open up a BJJ school in Doha. The logo’s done, the insurance issues have been sorted and legally everything is all fine. Now all that’s left is to find the proper partners and we’re sorted. I’m quite adamant that only experienced teachers will be allowed to instruct the class. None of that ‘join our school and do laps around the gym’.

Let’s see if it’s a success, I’ll be using a similar branding from my BJJ school in England.

The problem with blogs

The problem with blogs is that anybody who’s got a computer and an internet connection (all other accessories are optional), can have one.

I mean, I encourage them! In fact, go to iktib.com and open your own blog now! However you should always realise that it’s just a person writing his opinions down. However, some individuals have some strong influence. When I write, I try to make it clear that I’m just sharing some thoughts or commenting on an issue, however some think that they are writing down fact.

This is fact. 1+1=2. Plain and simple. Writing down your opinion is NOT.

Let’s look at Mr. Genious over here. Now he comments on FIFA and how they’re not doing their job. FIFA makes rules. Rules need to be followed. If FIFA said that if you spat on the ground you’d be expelled, then I’d expect everyone who spat on the ground to be expelled.
However this blogger seems to have his own views on things and seems to try to spread his garbage through his internal hate.

http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/blogs/halftimeorange/qatar-decision-a-dark-day-for-football-121838/

After reading that, go on and read my comments on this issue.

the Qatar FA was asked to ensure that the players were fine and they did just that. At NO point is it NORMAL to ensure that your players have falsified their passports and birth certificates, and as soon as it WAS brought to Qatar’s attention, they pulled him out!

His arguments are so very flawed!

A referee was born in Qatar but lived in the Emirates all his lief and IS Emiratee, so he must have been helping Qatar?

Then he goes on about a consipiracy about the Qatar Iraq match. I’m guessing he’s thinking Qatar paid Iraq to lose. Which the thought of is just stupid.

Then he says that Bahrain is helping out Qatar. Two countries who are pure rivals when it comes to sport.

If he doesn’t like the rules, he should play a different game. Seem’s to me someone’s not had their juice box.

Oh Sit!

Flick on the television and tune into one of those ‘work’ shows. Something like Boston Legal, Scrubs, Criminal Minds, Bones, and other shows and you’ll see that they actually make work look interesting. I can imagine people thinking, “Hey! I want to be a neuro-surgeon because I’ll look buff, get chicks and party all night long!”. That is, after all, what Mr. McSexy looks like and does.

Working in an office which involves sitting down all day gives you a gut. It’s as simple as that. You sit in your place for a solid 8 hours looking at a computer screen, sit during meetings while trying to either understand what’s going on or not drift away, sit when you’re reading important documents, sit when you drive to and from work, sit when you arrive home to eat, sit when it’s time to watch tv or play some games, and finally lay down to go to bed.

Yes my dear friends, we office-folk are sitters. I hereby recommend that baby-sitters get the same salary as a General Manager.

I’d like to think that I’m quite healthy most of the time. I do try to eat what’s good for me (thinks of a cheese burger with extra cheese and … you know what, skip the burger, just give me a lump of cheese!); I exercise whenever possible (three days of weight training, three days of cardio, one day of swimming laps), and I’m usually very positive. Since starting at my job however, exercising is now considered a luxury since I’m so drained of time.

Enter WiiFit. Alright, it might just be a gimmick, but simply moving around for 30-60 mins a day should improve my health right? Plus I’m feeling extra tired and that’s not a good sign! Let’s get back on topic. This guy basically used his Nintendo WiiFit game (which is essentially exercise routines in the form of video games) for around 45 days. He lost around 1.3 kilos a week which added up at the end of the day. I thought I’d give it a go since it’s too hot outside in good ol’ Qatar land to jog and it seems like something that should keep me interested for a while.

Let’s see what happens. Will I be yet another sitter?

Aasim’s Awesome Superior Sports Day

Well the guy’s had planned this day for a while now. The plan was to have a full day of sport.
This post should interest a lot of you as it’ll suggest stuff for you to do.

I got up at 8:30 am since we were going to start the day with breakfast at the Intercontinental at 9. After arriving we immediately dove in to get our food. The chefs prepared some scrambled egg for me. I asked for Japanese style (I had to kind of walk them through it); it’s spring onions, cheese, and a bit of sugar. I know, you’re thinking ‘sugar?’. Yes, just a bit. It tastes awesome. I also had some fruit sushi which was something I hadn’t seen before.

We then headed off to city center. First on the list was Bowling. Now I should mention that when my friend Laeek came to pick me up, I jabbed the palm of my hand onto the side of his door and got a fairly deep poke. Took the whole day before the blood would stop. It STILL hurts! What company (Audi) makes a sharp car door?!

After bowling it was a bit of Billiards. Two on two while we waited for Laeek to get back from Qatar Airways so we could go Ice Skating. All I can say is that I showed them how the game was played.

After waiting a bit, Laeek seemed to be running late at the QR office so we went ahead to Winter Wonderland (That’s in the City Center). The blades there are quite dull. I think that all public skates are fairly blunt anywhere, but after a bit of skating I think it started to sharpen up.

Next? Shooting! (Over into the New Markhiya area) You got to love the fact that you don’t need a gun license to shoot a shotgun or a sniper rifle. I’m pretty proud of the fact that I hit nearly all of the clay pigeons. The Qatari guys there are so kind and friendly. Always smiling and they give some great advice for targeting. I have to say that sniping targets is more fun for me. No recoil compared to the shot gun. My shoulder kind of hurts right now. Of course holding the gun with my cut didn’t help. It stung, but I’m a person who perseveres!

Finally we ended the day at the Doha Golf Course. (That’s at the end of Dafna, as if you’re driving towards Lusail). After looking like an idiots (I don’t like Golf), we spent a good few hours finishing off a 9-hole. Ah my body ached. I sunk into bed. A very very nice day.

Think we ended up spending around 150-200QR each.

Doha not selected *sighs*

You know what, I don’t want to sound like a sore loser, but something MUST have been going behind the scenes.
They usually choose FIVE countries to go through to the final voting process, but this time they selected four… they kicked out three.

It’s VERY suspicious. Looking at the Olympic report, Qatar had one of the highest scores overall!

Let’s hope we do better for 2020.

Olympics 2016 Part 2

When I look at the news around the world, I simply see posts by uneducated people.

I’ll highlight the amount of rubbish being spread.

Bangkok Post: “Qatar’s population is 500,000, this event is too big for them.” – That’s obviously written by someone who didn’t even bother to WIKI the facts. Qatar’s population is 1.4 million. The Asian Games was the most successfull in history!

Chicago Post: “oil money is the only reason to entertain the idea of an Olympics in this small, overheated country”. – Racism from lovely America? I guess it IS news by one of the bidding cities. Qatar is indeed rich yes, but that’s not the reason people we’ll be voted in. Plus if the Olympics happen, it’ll happen closer to October, which is the SAME TIME that the US did it during one of their Olympic events.

NBCOlympics.com: “Doha says it stands ready to welcome the world. But Qatar has never sent a female athlete to compete at the Olympics. Their population isn’t even a million.” – Obviously they didn’t do their research either. Qatar’s most famous Archer is a woman ‘for example’. There hasn’t been many women in the Olympics in general because none of them made the cut athletically!

BBC: “Doha has certainly put the dope cheat among the stool pigeons. The nation of Qatar should be considered tiny (pop. one million) by Olympic standards but incredibly wealthy (pop. one million rich property investors, oil magnates, playboys…).” – Again with the population mistake, however again with the lovely stereotype which clearly shows that news channels clearly don’t do their research. They’ve decided who they want to win and just go for it. Perhaps Qatar should start bribing these people or giving out impossible promises as others did.
If anyone deserves it, it’s Rio if not Doha. The US has had it many times and the olympics has a deeper meaning to it. Greed isn’t it.

Everyone who reads this. Qatar is a country with hopes and dreams. Don’t be like the rest of those ignorant, racist, and idiotic people who use stereotypes to justify reasoning. Use logic.

The Olympics in Doha – 2016

There’s been a lot of talk about the Olympics. I for one am very excited about the thought of us getting it. Not only does Qatar have nearly unlimited cash to spend on such an event, but 75% of the Olympic requirements have already been met. However I’m not only excited at the event itself.

It’s the fact that it will be bring further development and change. Qatar will be under the world’s spotlight and will be scrutinized. No doubt the Western media will try to put an evil spin on Qatar since it’s an Arabic country just as they did with China, but we’ll prevail as long as the right train of thought is there.

Think about it! New laws which’ll open up so many doors. Expats will most probably no longer need an exit permit, the Human Rights Authority will be given more funds and responsibilities, there’ll be more construction in anticipation for the games which’ll hopefully provide more accommodation than there is demand, plus it’ll bring a huge amount of businesses interested in opening up within Qatar.

Why do I personally want the games? I want to show the world the meaning of Arabic hospitality. I want to see foreigners come into Qatar and enjoy Qatari kindness. I want those who are corrupted and seedy to be exposed as a result of scrutiny, I want laws to open up and there to be more open-ness within the country, and I also want there to be a better perception of our culture. The list is endless! At the end of the day, Qatar’s Olympic motto is just right, the Doha 2016 Olympics will be ‘bringing change’. Read the rest of this entry »

Freedom of Expression

Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which the Qatari Government is a signatory of states: Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any medias and regardless of any frontiers.

The Emiri Decision Number 86 of the year 2007 on the establishment of the Doha Free Information Centre marked yet another step towards establishing a State of rights and freedom of speech. The decision stipulated that the Centre be a non-profit organization, headquartered in Doha City, and have the authority to establish other affiliated centres inside and outside Qatar. It is worth mentioning that His Highness the Emir issued a decision in 1998 annulling the ministry of information, giving birth to a new era of freedom of speech where censorship was removed from local media.
