Pictures and Videos from National Day 2010

This was already on the front page of iLoveQatar.net but I just wanted to share this awesome video of fireworks going over the skyline. This is probably the BEST video I’ve seen on ND.

Qatar National Day 2010 is coming!!

I’m sure that this national day is going to be a big one! With us winnning the 2022 World Cup as hosts, Qatar will probably want to show how awesome it can be.
Be warned though, if you are anywhere near the corniche, you’ll be stuck for a good couple of hours as people drive down on packed lanes, dancing, cheering, and waving flags.

Usually the westbay area has huge led screens showing different shows and arab celebrities (for those stuck in traffic and unable to watch the show on tv), trees are lit up with in themed colors (last year was purple and yellow), signs drip with led lights, banners and flags are waved all over the place and people parading to enjoy the festivities.

Around 6pm is when you should get on the corniche. That’s where you can see the sound and light show and enjoy the fireworks display. If you are lucky, you’ll also be able to get a table at Al Mourjan and enjoy some delicious food, desert, and if you’re partial to it, have some sheesha.

It’s going to be cold as usual, so make sure you come wearing a jacket. Last year was so amazingly cold and since the corniche is by the sea, I can assure you that you’ll regret not bringing something warm to wear.

So if you’re looking for a great guide to the events around Qatar (not just the official ones), visit http://www.nationalday2010.com You’ll find a bit of information about the history of Qatar, various events, some downloads, and you’ll also find some funny videos made by Qatar’s first Qatari comedian (and ILQ Ambassador), Mohammed Kamal! Thanks to Vodafone for helping ILQ put all this together. (To other companies, if you’re willing to partner up with ILQ and help us do other awesome stuff, please drop me a line!!)

Qatar’s very own Stand Up Comedian – Moh’d Kamal (and he’s funny too!)

There’s no doubt that Moh’d Kamal is one of the funniest Qataris around. I’m so very proud that he’s doing what he loves and not only that, he’s now an iLoveQatar.net ambassador too! I definately encourage all Qataris to break out of the mould and to be creative. It’s not always about being a manager or a doctor, (As Mohd explains himself in one of his skits).

Don’t forget to check out his national day videos at http://www.nationalday2010.com

His brand new YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/mohammedcomedy

His Facebook group http://www.facebook.com/mohammed.comedy (Please join it and like it to show support!)

His Twitter http://www.twitter.com/moeka4

Now this guy won the Ahmed Ahmed (from Axis of Evil) standup competition, was at the Amman Comedy Festival, performed with Erik Griffin and Edwin San Juan, and he’s only just started! He’s also not only supported by iLoveQatar.net, but also bythe Doha Film Institute too!

Did you know that besides being a comedian he’s also doing great stuff for the community? I’ll leave him to tell you what he’s been up to in the comments below.

Keep it up Moh’d! Way to go!

I thought I’d make a list of tweeters to follow. It’s Halloween :)

Besides the special ILQ logo (Looks like I’m doing a lot about logos these days!)

Now Halloween isn’t celebrated in Qatar but this one goes out to all the expats that celebrate it over here :)

Here’s a special Halloween Track :)

Doha Tribeca Film Festival 2010 in Katara

I’ve just come back from Malta (great people there!) and sadly missed the opening of the Doha Tribeca Film Festival BUT some of the ILQ gang went over to Katara to hang out, shake some hands, take some pics and kiss some babies (in no particular order). ILQ also bumped into Salma Hayek. Literally…. smooth Bassam.. real smoooth.

I’ll post some awesome photos as soon as they’re posted on the forums but in the mean time here’s ILQ’s special DTFF logo :)

Digital Reversal. Calling Bloggers. A new magazine.

Sorry for the ‘radio-silence’ all. Besides working hard on trying to get the new version of ILQ up and running after losing 3 months of work due to my hard disk failing after the electricity getting cut WHILE it was backing up and thus corrupting the OLD backup (yup!) I’ve also been working on a number of ventures. This includes a project which I call ‘Digital Reversal’.

Before I explain what that is, (don’t you just hate it when Entertainment Tonight does that?), if you’ve got a blog, drop me a comment below so I can share it with everyone in ILQ’s next newsletter. You’ll find some blogs in the footer of this blog or you might also be interested in these past blog posts:

The problem with blogs

Qatar blogs

Qatar’s top blogs

This leads onto the Digital Reversal project. Now blogging was born out of two cosmic collisions; The fact that getting it was easier to post on the digital medium known as the blog and people’s preference to read nonprofessional journalism because… well…. the blogger usually doesn’t have anything to gain and it’s most likely going to be honest and free.

Now what I’d like to do is encourage these bloggers and columnists to write for a magazine which is going to become the most widely circulated magazine in Qatar; hence the digital reversal.

If you’re opinionated, it’s a great way of getting your views, ideas, and opinions out there. If you’re passionate, it’s a great way of sharing what give’s you goosebumps or motivates you to live life. You might even have the goal of inspiring people through a number of topics. You decide.

So if you’re interested in writing a column, getting your name out there, getting some experience, making a name for yourself, or simply honing your hobby, then drop me a line at contact  (@) iloveqatar.net

I’m arranging a meeting on Thursday at 7:30pm (I’ll email you more details). So far there are 7 passionate people coming along.

Happy Blogging!

Art Dog Day in Doha

So ILQ sponsored the Art Dog Day and the Fur Ball that happened some days ago. It was so great to be a part of a fun event! We’re taught in our faith, that it’s important to treat all of God’s creatures with respect.

Let’s look at the concept of Halal for example (no I’m not encouraging eating your pets! Relax!) The reason why we have Halal food is because it’s a human way of killing livestock. So it’s funny how someone can go and kick a cat, but then ask for a Halal burger. Ah well, I digress!

Interested in seeing a few photos of the event? Click here http://iloveqatar.net/forum/read.php?5,12035

If you were one of the attendees, you could have picked up some ILQ freebies, like one of these Beachballs!

Freedom of Expression

Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which the Qatari Government is a signatory of states: Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any medias and regardless of any frontiers.

The Emiri Decision Number 86 of the year 2007 on the establishment of the Doha Free Information Centre marked yet another step towards establishing a State of rights and freedom of speech. The decision stipulated that the Centre be a non-profit organization, headquartered in Doha City, and have the authority to establish other affiliated centres inside and outside Qatar. It is worth mentioning that His Highness the Emir issued a decision in 1998 annulling the ministry of information, giving birth to a new era of freedom of speech where censorship was removed from local media.
